Mission statement to publishers:

Youth's defiance of authority is as certain and universal as thirst. This story about such defiance is based on true stories from my father's life in the early 20^th Century.

This is not a book for the squeamish. It is a true account of rural life between 1910 and 1918 — before modern medicine for treating boils, broken noses and syphilis...before social systems to care for abused children and the mentally ill...before lynch mobs were outlawed and before railroad detectives were limited in the physical harm they could inflict on "free loaders"...before telephones, cars and computers in every home.

Although the 1910-18 setting may seem exotic to readers, I hope they will recognize how similar life's problems were a century ago and today. I hope, too, that there may be some certain and universal truths buried in John Debbs' adventures — truths that will get my readers thinking about rash actions before their consequences become too difficult.

Those who achieve wisdom and success have traveled what Joseph Campbell calls "the hero's journey." John Debbs begins his journey in A Good Fist. His odyssey continues in forthcoming sequels.
