Mission Statement:

'The "Exacta!"' chronicles a particular horse race that took place at a very
well known northeast racetrack during the early seventies.  This book is
based on true events that led up to and eventually crossed paths with a
sinister plan, the result of which would be one of the worst exotic wager
payoffs in history.  I have attempted to demonstrate what happens when the
men in charge decide to manipulate the outcome of a sporting event.  It
also shows how greed can rear it's ugly head and the best-laid plans can go
asunder.

The story culminates with the burning of the track and the stoning of the
race participants by the fans as they are being escorted from the track.
The armored car that was there to pick up the money was commandeered into
service to get some of these race participants out.  Everything that could
burn was set afire.  Anything that could be thrown was being thrown.
Anything that could be broken was being broken.  The F.B.I. was standing
by, patiently waiting for the perpetrators to cash the winning tickets.

Somebody tipped somebody and only the poor suckers who were lucky or
unlucky enough to have picked the right combination, went to the windows to
cash a ticket worth perhaps 10% of it's real value.  Everybody who cashed a
winning ticket was scrutinized and the large blocks of ten-dollar tickets
remain unredeemed to this day.  It was estimated that over one hundred
thousand 1970's dollars remain uncashed.

Greed prevailed, and was the major contributor to this fiasco.  This is
usually the case when men are involved and have total control over the
outcome.  These guys were good. This is how it happened.  This is how it
happens.  This is how it will continue to happen.

I once heard a man howl out in agony when a race didn't go his way and he
was sure he had been hoodwinked, "They been screwing me like this for
thirty years now."  This blaring commentary only assures the proliferation
of this type of behavior and demonstrates beyond a shadow of a doubt that most
people are really in it purely for "the action."
